Investigators disclosed that a Dodge Nitro drifted off the road, hit a curb, and then smashed into a utility pole, pulling down power lines in the process.
The vehicle then rolled onto its side and stopped against a tree.
The three people in the vehicle were trapped. Emergency crews extricated them and provided medical assistance. According to the Holland Department of Public Safety, the fallen power lines hampered them.
The driver of the Dodge was a 66-year-old Holland woman whose name was not released. The authorities said she was taken to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids via Aero Med.
Meanwhile, Leffler, the front seat passenger, passed away on the spot.
The passenger in the backseat, a 64-year-old man from Holland, was transported to Holland Hospital. His name was not released and there was no information on the extent of his injuries or those of the driver.
The relationship between the three people has not been released in accident reports.
Eyewitnesses said there were no other vehicles in the area when the crash occurred, and investigators believe excessive speed contributed to the crash.
However, the authorities are examining the possibility that something else affected the driver.
Depending on how the accident occurred, Leffler’s family may have grounds to file a wrongful death lawsuit.
