Officials have identified both victims of the accident as residents of Hephzibah.
33-year-old Larry Robert Kersey and 33-year-old Amanda Hughes were the named victims. Preliminary investigations have concluded that the motorcycle was heading eastbound on Mims Road.
The motorcycle veered off the westbound side of the road and hit a culvert. It is still unknown what caused the motorcycle to lose its original course. That will be a part of the investigation. Police determined that Kersey and Hughes died as a result of the accident. They did not specify if it was due to the injuries they sustained.
Reports completed have not specified if the riders were wearing helmets at impact.
The state requires that all motorcycle drivers wear a helmet. This also applies to passengers on the motorcycle as well. The helmet must meet the standards released by the Department of Transportation.
These standards include:
- A DOT sticker attached to the helmet
- Thick inner liner that is at least one inch thick
- Tough and sturdy chin strap
- Certified helmets weigh three or more pounds
- There will be nothing coming off of the helmet that extends more than one-fifth of an inch. This includes decorations.
- Full facial shield for protection
Kersey and Hughes are being sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for autopsy.
Once performed, the autopsy should provide more answers about the accident. There has not been mention of drugs and/or alcohol having involvement in the accident.
The actual injuries sustained were not in the report. The investigation into the accident is ongoing. More details will be available after the autopsy is completed.
