As Abikzer was standing outside his vehicle, a truck being driven by a city building inspector crashed into him. The driver was identified as Jeffrey Eric Joel. Abikzer lost both his legs which had to be amputated because of the injuries caused by the crash. He went on to sue Mercedes-Benz, the city of L.A., and the city inspector Joel. The city inspector sued Mercedes-Benz, claiming that the company’s vehicle created a hazard he could not foresee.
The car company initially tried to blame the responsibility on a glitch in the car’s software which had caused the vehicle to suddenly turn off. However, according to the latest reports, the company ultimately reached a settlement with Abikzer. The precise amount or terms of this settlement are not public knowledge.
The city of L.A. has also reached an agreement with Gabriel Abikzer now. As per this agreement, the city will pay him $11.5 million now and another $11.5 million the next year in July.
