A single-vehicle crash on Highway 101 in the Atascadero area of California left one person dead and three others injured on Sunday, July 5th. The car accident report named 20-year-old Kyle Leventhal, of San Mateo, as the fatal victim, and the survivors as Grant Cosko, 20, of Burlingame, Adam Joss, 20, of Menlo Park, and Carter Norton, 20, of Redwood City.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Cosko drove a car northbound on the Highway near Del Rio Road. Suddenly, he swerved towards the right shoulder of the roadway, and then abruptly turned the steering wheel to the left, trying to re-enter traffic. The vehicle went off the road and overturned onto an embankment.

The car rolled multiple times and came to rest upside down on its roof. The CHP said that several people tried to rescue the occupants of the vehicle before it caught fire. Cosko, Joss, and Norton sustained minor to moderate injuries. Levanthal, who was the right front-seat passenger, suffered fatal injuries.
The investigators said that drugs or alcohol do not appear to have played a role in the accident, but the investigation is ongoing. The crash caused a minor vegetation fire in the area, and the CHP had to close the road for a few hours.
Motor vehicle accidents occur due to otherwise avoidable reasons birthed in negligence. Drivers can prevent crashes by following the road’s rules, and putting their safety, their passengers, and other road users first.
