Sgt. Mike Gerrity said the man died at the scene, and the driver stayed behind and cooperated with the investigation. Drugs or alcohol did not appear to have played a role in the accident in any capacity.
When an accident occurs, those involved have different reactions depending on the degree of negligence they contributed to it. While some would instinctively flee the scene, others will stay behind and cooperate with the investigating authority.
The California Vehicle Code provides that after a collision, drivers should park at the scene or look for the next possible place where parking will not impact traffic flow. After doing the latter, return to the location, and check to see if there’s an injury or death.
Whatever the case, call 911, provide first aid if possible and wait for the first responders to arrive. If there’s no injury or death, but there is damage to property, locate the owner, and exchange contact, driver’s license, and insurance information. If the owner of the property is not around, leave the information in a conspicuous place.
