Preliminary reports indicate that a Nissan Rogue driven by 40-year-old Darrel Pickett was going northbound on Royal Drive when he failed to stop at a stop sign. He then proceeded to go over a guardrail, through a fence that ran along the interstate, and into the traffic that was traveling eastbound on the I-20.
Pickett’s Nissan then crashed into a Toyota Camry that was going east on the interstate. The impact was reported to have occurred on the driver’s side of the vehicle. The driver of the Camry was later identified as 52-year-old Joyce Polk of Covington. Polk was pronounced dead at the scene.
Pickett was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta for his injuries. As of the time of the report, his injuries had not been released to the public. There have also been no indications as to the condition he was in after the accident.
Following the crash, traffic was rerouted along Covington Highway so an investigation could be completed. The case is now being investigated by the Georgia State Police’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team.
Once the team has recreated the accident, there is a possibility Picket may be facing charges for the accident and the death of Polk. There has not been any indication as to what caused Pickett to disregard the stop sign or go over the guardrail.
There have been no reports of the presence of alcohol or drugs in the initial report, nor has speed been suggested as a factor.
