A single-vehicle crash during the weekend sent a male driver to the hospital and claimed his passenger’s life. The California Highway Patrol said that Jorge Martin Martinez, 25, of Los Angeles, struck his car against a guardrail on Interstate 5 in the Pacoima area of California on Saturday, August 1st.
The agency’s accident report showed that the man drove a 2012 GMC cargo van southbound on Golden State (5) Freeway to the transition road of westbound Hollywood (170) Freeway. Martinez drove at an unknown speed, causing him to leave the roadway, straight into the guardrail.

The CHP said that at about 2:35 a.m., the motorist ended up in the gore point or triangular piece of land of the transition road. When officers arrived, they found one person trapped in the wrecked white van but didn’t specify if it was the driver or the passenger.
Responding medics transported Martinez and his unidentified passenger to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center – Mission Hills. The passenger died while undergoing treatment, and the driver got treated for minor injuries. The investigators suspect alcohol as a factor in the collision.
There is no information on Martinez getting arrested or cited for the incident, but the investigation is still active. The CHP’s Altadena office wants members of the public with helpful information to contact them on the listed line. If the investigators confirm intoxication as a factor in the accident, then under California law, the driver would face criminal charges, and if found guilty, severe penalties.
