The law enforcement agencies investigated, took measurements of the crash site, and closed off Black Road from River Road to Route 59. They redirected traffic for several hours and reopened BR to traffic Thursday evening.
SPD Chief Aaron Klima said in a news briefing that the driver who struck Hilger remained at the scene and cooperated with them. The motorist was not injured, and the police have not brought a charge against the person. They are waiting for the WCSO accident reconstruction result to determine what happened and if the driver is liable in any way.
Klima said Shorewood had not experienced a fatal pedestrian accident in many years, and SPD will release updates as events unfold.
Auto-pedestrian collisions, as recorded in accident reports, is one of the leading causes of crash-related deaths due to the severity of the injuries suffered. The latter ranges from head trauma, fractures, broken bones, to internal bleeding and organ damage.
