The latter was traveling at high speed at about 4:25 p.m. Witnesses put the speed of the Nissan at 100 miles per hour, while the report by the police puts it at 81mph. Tragedy struck after both vehicles passed the Posey Road exit.
The Nissan, driven by 21-year-old Joel Lamont Torres, crossed the access road and struck a dirt pile, which caused it to rollover. The impact of the crash ejected Wilson about 70 feet from where the wrecked vehicle ended up.
The young woman’s injuries were extensive, and medics with the Hays County EMS took her to Ascension Seton Hays in Kyle for treatment. The police chief said that Wilson was not wearing her seat belt, but Torres was, and he sustained minor injuries.
The medics took the driver to the hospital for treatment, and the police arrested him on the charge of racing on the highway involving severe bodily injury. The offense is a second-degree felony, and he is currently out on a bail bond of $15 000.
The investigation remains active, and those involved in this kind of accident should contact auto accident attorneys.
