Investigators gathered from eyewitness accounts that the involved vehicle was traveling on Fifth Avenue at speeds above 100 mph. Upon approaching the road’s intersection with Fackney, the driver of the 2006 Pontiac G6 failed to stop for the red light and entered the intersection at the same speed.
The move caused him to drive off the road and collide with a tree. The motorist, Grant, and his sole Passenger, Rhodes, suffered fatal injuries in the wreck, and paramedics pronounced them dead at the scene.
Following the crash, traffic officers shut down parts of Fackney and Fifth streets as officers worked to clear the scene and gather evidence. The accident reports affirmed that the White County Sheriff’s Department, the White County Coroner’s Office, the county’s ambulance service, the Carmi Police Auxiliary assisted in the operation. The Carmi Fire Department and the Cherry St. Auto also responded.
The incident remains under investigation.
