The store employee and victim of the accident, Victor Talavera, 57, of Long Beach, followed the suspect as he fled. The man reportedly jumped on the hood of Darby’s car in an attempt to stop him from getting away with the stolen items.
The suspect drove away on a moderate speed and traveled several blocks before arriving at the intersection of Anaheim and Magnolia Avenue. The man then swerved to shake off Talavera, and the victim fell on the roadway where an oncoming utility van struck him.
The older man sustained fatal injuries which he succumbed to at the scene. Darby fled in his car, and days after the LBPD released video footage of the occurrence in a bid to locate him with the public’s help.
The police said they arrested the suspect while he was driving the vehicle they believed he used in throwing off the victim. They booked him into the Long Beach City Jail on a $2 million bail bond. There is no additional information at this time.
