Different accounts from deputies in the counties put Gabriel’s speed on the day of the crash, February 15th, at 128 mph. The officers at various times tried to get the young man to pull over, but he kept on going until he crashed.
Gabriel was traveling with a passenger identified as Carmisha Slayton, 22; the two are from Detroit. The young woman sustained severe injuries, and the first responders used an air ambulance to transport her to a Kalamazoo hospital.
Slayton passed away at the hospital, and the autopsy report showed that she died of complications from injuries. The preliminary hearing of the case began in March but had to get postponed for the availability of the autopsy result.
Berrien Chief Assistant Prosecutor Steve Pierangeli said that Gabriel is facing in addition to the murder charge, first-degree fleeing and eluding police. The others are reckless driving causing death, and driving while license suspended, causing death.
Gabriel is at Berrien County Jail awaiting trial. He faces up to life in prison if convicted. The young man’s trial begins on June 2nd, and auto accident attorneys would help with his defense.
