Police have arrested a man accused of fleeing the scene of a
fatal crash earlier this month on Chicago’s West Side and attempting to deceive
investigators by reporting his car stolen.
Twenty-five-year-old Jaimee Chandler faces a charge of
leaving the scene of a crash involving death, the Cook County State’s
Attorney’s Office reported. He allegedly was behind the wheel May 6 when he
fatally struck a 57-year-old pedestrian in Lawndale before fleeing the scene.

Chandler will need representation from a car injury attorney
during upcoming court proceedings.
Chandler at about 9 p.m. May 6 was driving in the 2400 block
of West Congress Parkway when he came upon a vehicle that had stopped in the
road, Chicago police reported.
The driver of the second vehicle reportedly was attempting to give some
leftover food to a pair of pedestrians.
Police said Chandler then attempted to drive around the
stopped vehicle, striking William Merritt, of Lincoln Park, in the process.
Merritt was thrown a short distance as a result of the crash and was pronounced
dead at the scene, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office reported.
Chandler is accused of calling police the next day to report
that his car had been stolen while he was attempting to complete a drug deal.
However, police said he admitted to his role in the crash during questioning.
Chandler appeared in court Tuesday, and his bond was set at $200,000. He and his car injury attorney are due back in court June 8, according to authorities.
