Cortijo at about 9:15 p.m. Monday was driving near Lake View Avenue and Ottawa Street when he apparently lost control of his vehicle, according to authorities. The vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a utility pole, car accident reports state.
Emergency medical services personnel responded to the scene, but Cortijo was pronounced dead before he could be taken to a hospital for treatment, authorities said. No passengers or other occupants of the vehicle were listed on car accident reports available Wednesday.
Few details about the moments leading up to the crash were available Wednesday. First responders found the wreckage of Cortijo’s vehicle at the crash site, but an exact cause has not yet been determined.
The incident remains under investigation by the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office and the Lowell Police Department. Authorities have not said whether they suspect the involvement of contributing factors, such as the use of intoxicants, excessive speeding or inattentive driving.
A GoFundMe campaign was launched by Cortijo’s loved ones to raise money for funeral expenses. More than $2,000 was raised in the campaign’s first day.
“Our heart is broken,” organizers wrote in the campaign description. “(Cortijo) left his wife and a (son) due to a tragic accident.”
