Based on the preliminary reports released about the accident, 34-year-old Anthony Duncan of Cairo was driving southbound on Illinois 3 when he lost control while driving his car. When his car left the road, it hit an embankment and started to roll.
The car came to rest against a tree.
Emergency personnel pronounced Duncan dead at the scene of the accident due to the extensive injuries he sustained.
The body sustains a lot of damage during a car accident. When rollover accidents occur, the upper extremities and the chest are often the most impacted. The head and face follow this. If a seatbelt is worn in an accident that involves a rollover, the majority of the damage is caused by hitting the doors and the roof.
In a front end accident, like hitting a tree, a driver wearing a seatbelt can cause damage to the chest and the lower extremities. If a driver is not wearing a seatbelt, they will often have head trauma as a result of hitting the windshield.
The reports did not indicate if Duncan was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. It was also not determined if alcohol or drugs were a factor with him losing control of the vehicle. The Illinois State Police are still investigating the cause of the accident.
