A woman is suing the Center at Park West nursing home in Reseda following the death of her 66-year-old mother from COVID-19.
Griselda Nava is alleging that the facility’s safety measures were inadequate and this caused the May 19 death of Florentina Lopez.

Lopez resided at the facility since December 2012 after she suffered a stroke.
The lawsuit accuses the Center at Park West of negligence, wilful misconduct, elder abuse, and wrongful death.
According to the claim filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court, Park West didn’t tell Nava about the extent to which COVID-19 was present there. It is also alleged that the nursing home didn’t tell Nava that her mother was showing signs of the coronavirus.
In addition, the suit claims that Park West didn’t test any of its residents until or after May 22.
There was no immediate response from the home.
The lawsuit contends that Park West failed to put appropriate safety measures in place months after California and Los Angeles County declared a state of emergency.
Nava’s claim says that during April and May, the leadership of Park West learned that several members of staff had COVID-19 or were suspected of having it. However, officials allegedly did not tell residents and their families.
The suit alleges that this was because the company didn’t have adequate staff numbers and it didn’t want to spend money on hiring replacements for those who were ill.
It also claims that as late as May, the nursing home did not give workers any personal protective equipment even if they had the virus.
This is just one in a series of COVID-19 lawsuits being filed in California.
