Almost a year after a couple living in Los Angeles, California, lost their children to a fatal accident, they have brought a lawsuit to seek redress. Francisco Lorenzo and Angelina Nicolas, on Monday, March 30th, sued the city of Los Angeles.
The couple also joined Los Angeles Unified, Metro and Caltrans as defendants in the suit. They are suing for wrongful death with unspecified damages, and they’ve placed liability on the feet of the defendants.

Lorenzo and Nicolas lost their daughters, Amy, 12, and Marlene, 14, to an accident that occurred near 37th Street and Broadway on April 4th, 2019. A big rig struck the sisters on their way to school in the 1 ½ miles of Clinton Middle School.
Marlene died at the scene of the accident, but Amy made it to the hospital. The young girl was hospitalized for about three weeks in critical condition before she succumbed to her wounds.
Lorenzo and Nicolas, in their court documents, claimed that Broadway has heavy traffic, and a history of traffic accidents and near-collisions. The couple noted that children had to combat those dangers every day, and the multiple crossing points provided by the city did more harm than good.
The couple alleges that the city should have focused more on the safer crossing point. Also, on the day Lorenzo and Nicolas lost their daughters, there were no crossing guards on the roadway to help the students.
The couple also believes that the truck that struck their children was working at a nearby construction project, and should not have been in the area while school children walked the streets. The city of Los Angeles has not responded to the lawsuit.
