Barrera was wearing a seatbelt, and the truck’s airbags deployed. The call about the accident came in at about 6:32 a.m., and the man was near Silver Star Road in Burlington Township when he crashed. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The paramedics took the driver using St. Mary’s EMS to St. Mary’s Hospital in Detroit Lakes for treatment. The TSP said that the driver was not impaired, thereby ruling out the influence of drugs or alcohol in the crash.
Based on accident reports in Texas, a driver who does not wear a seatbelt risks fatality when an accident occurs. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, wearing a seatbelt improves the survival of front-seat passengers during a crash by 50%.
Wearing lap and shoulder belts — together with airbags — is the most effective way to reduce fatalities and severe injuries when involved in an accident. Thus, shoulder belts should go over the shoulder and across the center of the chest.
Lap belts should fit across the hips and not the stomach, and drivers should never tuck a shoulder belt under the arm or behind his or her back. Failure to do any of this attracts a fine of $25 to $250 plus court costs.
