Investigations conducted at the site indicated that the two truck-tractor towing a semi-trailer collided on northbound 227. One of the vehicles, driven by 52-year-old Benito Garcia of San Angelo, was northbound on the highway when the other suddenly veered into its path.
The reports suggest the semi which veered into the wrong way did so after it hydroplaned while driving on the south lanes of travel. Police said the road was wet and slippery at the time due to a previous thunderstorm, which may have caused the vehicle to veer into oncoming traffic and collide head-on with Benito Garcia’s vehicle.
Emergency responders pronounced Garcia deceased at the scene. Jaime Alejandro Gonzalez, who was behind the wheels of the second 18-wheeler, suffered severe injuries. An ambulance transported him to Shannon Medical Center with undisclosed incapacitating injuries.
The Texas Department of Public Safety is heading an investigation into the crash.
In such situations where an external factor outside the control of either party appears to have caused the wreck, it is advisable for the victims to seek the expertise of auto accident attorneys.
