Police said a driver was killed early Sunday morning when he ran a red light on Chicago’s South Side, causing a crash that seriously injured his passenger and another driver.
Twenty-one-year-old Eugene Figures was pronounced dead at an area hospital not long after the wreck, which was reported just after 2 a.m. in Chicago’s Jeffery Manor neighborhood, according to the Chicago Police Department. Two other suffered serious injuries in the two-vehicle crash, car accident reports state.

Figures at 2:15 a.m. Sunday was driving southbound in the 9500 block of South Jeffery Avenue when he ran a red light at an intersection, according to authorities. Car accident reports state that Figures’ vehicle smashed into another sedan in the intersection.
Emergency medical personnel transported Figures to Christ Medical Center in Oaklawn, according to authorities. However, he later succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead.
A passenger in Figures’ vehicle suffered potentially life-threatening injuries, authorities said. The 20-year-old woman, whom authorities did not publicly identify in car accident reports, was transported to the same hospital.
The other driver, identified only as a 30-year-old man, also suffered serious injuries. Authorities did not provide updated condition reports Monday afternoon.
The incident remains under investigation by the Chicago Police Department’s Major Accidents Unit. Investigators haven’t said whether either driver might have been using intoxicants prior to the crash, nor have they said whether other factors like speed are thought to have contributed.
