The man sustained extensive injuries, and the medics pronounced him dead. The Dodge driver, a 36-year-old man, remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. The police closed the intersection for several hours while gathering evidence.
The FPD does not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident. There is currently no additional information, and the investigation remains active.
Statistics from the California Office of Traffic Safety shows that the rate of pedestrian accidents and fatality is becoming increasingly dangerous. The state has more pedestrian deaths on its roadways than other states in the US, and its fatality rate is 25% higher than the national average.
Between 2014 and 2018, more than 14 000 people sustained injuries from auto-pedestrian collisions, and between 2009 and 2018, 7, 500 people died. OTS believes that reducing the numbers is a two-day street and would only happen if drivers and pedestrians work together to demonstrate safe road behaviors and protect themselves and those around them.
