Investigators determined that one of the vehicles was a Toyota Tundra, driven by a Sacramento local identified as Edgar Mayorga. The other car, conveying two people, was a Kia Niro. Both vehicles were traveling northbound on the state route, with the Kia on the #2 lane, while the Toyota was in the #3 lane.
The Toyota, which was at the time, traveling above the permissible speed limit on SR-99, suddenly crossed into the number 2 lane, where it collided with the northbound Kia. The struck vehicle went ablaze upon impact before drifting off the roadway, while the Toyota ended up disabled on the right shoulder.
The unidentified Kia driver was able to get out of the burning car before it became fully engulfed, leaving the passenger pinned inside. Emergency responders pronounced the 30-year-old female passenger deceased upon their arrival. They transported the driver to UC Davis Hospital for treatment of major burns.
The offending motorist did not get harmed in the crash. Officers believe Mayorga was under the influence of liquor when the crash happened. They detained him at the Sacramento County Main Jail on DUI charges and felony gross vehicular manslaughter.
