The first responders took the injured two to the Kaweah Delta Medical Center for treatment. Huerta was also injured minorly in the accident, and the police took him into custody after determining that he was driving under the influence.
There is no information on the charges against the young man, and the investigation into the accident is ongoing.
Driving under the influence is a severe offense in California, frowned at by the courts. The legal blood alcohol concentration limit of the state is below .08%, and research has shown that anything from that point affects a driver mentally.
According to NHTSA, about 30 people die every day in the United States from drunk driving accidents. It means that drunk-driving collisions claim about 10 000 lives yearly, with one person dying every 50 minutes.
The accidents occur because alcohol reduces brain function leading to impaired thinking, reasoning, and muscle coordination. The more alcohol rises in a person’s system, the more it negatively affects the central nervous system, as the stomach walls absorb it.
Traffic officials advise that drivers should not drink and drive. An intoxicated driver should seek alternate means of transportation, and when there’s an accident, consult a drunk driving attorney.
