The Maxima was attempting to make a U-turn and the Sorento ended up hitting the Maxima on the passenger side. The speed of the Sorento was not released, it is unclear if it played a role in the severity of the impact.
Butts was one of the passengers in the Maxima that had to be taken by medical personnel to the hospital. Butts died while in the hospital being treated for the injuries he sustained in the accident.
The other passenger was 33-year-old April Campbell who suffered a broken arm and collapsed lung in the accident. The spokesperson for the police department was unsure of her condition during the release on Monday.
61-year-old Phillip Stevenson Dennis was the driver of the Sorento, and 66-year-old Lucy Mae Whitlock was the driver of the Maxima.
Based on where the impact on both vehicles took place, neither driver was injured in the accident. They were cleared while they were still at the scene.
The Athens-Clarke County Police Department did not comment about possible charges in connection to the accident. The investigation is currently ongoing.
