The collision report stated that a CHP officer was on the scene of an earlier traffic accident, when a Nissan Altima slammed into the officer’s motorcycle.
The driver of the Altima was reportedly speeding while trying to pass traffic using the shoulder of the freeway.
After the patrol motorcycle was struck, it was pushed into the CHP officer, who was then pushed into several other vehicles.
The driver and passenger in the Altima exited their vehicle and attempted to flee the scene on foot. CHP says a couple of witnesses chased after the driver, who was then arrested.
The CHP officer, another motorist, and a tow truck driver were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
Westbound traffic on I-10 was closed for several hours until being reopened around 3:30 p.m.
