In a press statement, the Texas DPS divulged that the victim was driving a Honda on I-10, and attempted to switch lanes. The motorist failed to notice a second vehicle which was on the centre lane in time before attempting the left-lane change. Upon sighting the car, 49-year-old Demetrio Martinez Reyes of Beaumont did a last-minute manoeuvre back into the right lane to avoid a collision.
The move caused Reyes to lose control of his vehicle, which continued off the right shoulder into a grassy area. DPS officials said the car overturned several times before it eventually came to rest on the field.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find Reyes fatally injured in his wrecked Honda. Justice of Peace, Joy Dubose-Simonton, confirmed his death a few minutes after the traffic wreck. The accident reports did not disclose any record of additional casualties.
