Preliminary reports suggested that at about 4:03 p.m., Dorothy Lankin was waiting at a bus stop near the area when the tragedy occurred. Metropolitan police officers said the 2020 Toyota Corolla involved in the wreck was traveling at a high rate of speed before the collision. The car suddenly drove off the road and climbed the sidewalk where it hit two electric poles. The vehicle then veered into the bus stop and ran over the pedestrian before eventually coming to rest.
The emergency response crews found Lankin trapped underneath the crashed Toyota. Meanwhile, the motorist abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot after the accident. The suspect remains at large, and officers are actively investigating the case.
The Metropolitan Police authorities urged anyone with helpful information regarding the crash to contact the Metro’s collision investigation section.
