The Illinois State Police said three bicyclists, Schuh included, rode their bikes westbound on the right side of U.S. Route 150, about a half-mile east of County Road 125 east at about 4:20 p.m. Simultaneously, the semi-truck traveled in the same direction and struck two of the bicycle riders.
The second bicyclist did not sustain life-threatening injuries. The police said the semi’s driver failed to stop at the scene but kept driving, making the crash a hit-and-run.
The investigators believe the vehicle was possibly white and silver and has some damage to the passenger side. The crash remains under investigation, and there’s no additional information at this time.
Auto-bicycle accidents can either end in minor, severe, or fatal injuries for the bicycle rider due to the bike’s open design. Common causes of this type of accident include driver’s speeding, the sudden opening of car doors, debris on the road, and bicyclists riding outside their designated lane.
