Rather than stay at the scene as prescribed by the law, the man fled, causing the police to give chase. Powell kept on driving, hitting some stop sticks along the way until he ran into a police patrol car stationed to block traffic on Ga. 21, precisely at Laurel Street in Springfield.

Sullivan said the man also struck a pickup truck and a wrecker in his bid to get away. No one was reported hurt or dead in the accident, and several police officers were at the final scene of the crash on Ga. 21.

Powell was arrested and taken to the county jail. The jail records show that he is facing several charges consisting of fleeing from the police, reckless driving, drunken driving, and probation violation.

The man is also charged with open container, weaving, hit-and-run, speeding, driving while license is suspended or revoked, and aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer. These offenses are charged either as a misdemeanor or a felony.

If convicted on all charges, Powell faces a cumulative number of years in jail and a fine. His driving privileges might also get suspended for driving with a revoked license and get lifted at a time the court decides.
