The call came from a group of hikers about a rockslide in the foothills west of the 10500-block of Alfred Harrell Highway, and the possible entrapment of one person. When the first responders arrived at the scene, they found Strane’s equipment in the dirt and rocks in the area.
The equipment helped the authorities to locate the position of the man’s body, but it took them a while to bring him out because of poor lighting and the adverse terrain. Strane was already unresponsive at the time, and the medics pronounced him dead.
The coroner ruled the cause of death as an accident, and there is no additional information at this time.
California accident reports show that hiking accidents occur for several reasons, mostly beyond the hiker’s control. The state’s Department of Parks and Recreation advises hikers to exercise caution and follow safety tips.
The latter includes hiking with friends or family members, taking a lot of water, informing relatives about the hiking trip, and not walking off trails. Stay away from wildlife encountered on the trails, and identify and avoid poison oaks.
