In a media release, the PPD revealed that the semi tractor-trailer was traveling through the east lanes of I-80. For unknown reasons, the vehicle crossed the center divider into oncoming traffic and collided with a westbound car. The semi then veered off the highway and slammed into the west end of the building on the 2700 block of May Road. The tractor-trailer emerged from the east side, police said, causing major damages to the property. No one was present in the building at the time of the crash.
The operator of the big rig identified as David Joy, 48, of Omaha suffered injuries in the collision. Peru EMS was present at the scene and transported him to Illinois Valley Community Hospital for treatment.
The Illinois State Police later cited Joy for improper lane usage.
The accident reports did not disclose information about the occupants of the other vehicle involved, and their conditions.
The incident is under investigation by the ISP and the PPD.
