Preliminary investigations done by the Texas Department of Public Safety indicated that a 2005 Honda was driving westbound on FM 1006 driven by 18-year-old Anthony Palomo of Woodville.
For reasons still under investigation, Palomo lost control of the Honda and began to skid sideways.
In the other direction was a 2000 Ford SUV driving FM 1006 going eastbound driven by 47-year-old Dane Yates of Port Arthur. As the out of control Honda began to cross the eastbound lane of traffic, Yates hit Palomo’s Honda.
As emergency crews arrived at the accident it was apparent that injuries were extensive. The Justice of the Peace Rodney Price was called to the scene and shortly after his arrival, he had verified that Palomo had died as a result of the injuries that he sustained in the accident with Yates.
There has not been a determination as to what caused Palomo to lose control of the Honda in the first place. The Texas Department of Public Safety will be investigating all possible causes such as mechanical failure, weather, human error, or if drugs/alcohol played a role in Palomo losing control.
Yates was taken from the scene to Christus Southeast Texas-St. Elizabeth Hospital for his injuries. At the time of transport, his injuries were being classified as serious. There has been no update as to his present condition.
The Texas Department of Public Safety completely shut down both lanes (eastbound and westbound) on FM 1006 while they investigated and cleared the scene of the accident. The road was reopened once they were finished. There has been no official announcement of their findings, only the preliminary report at this
