Investigations conducted at the scene of the encounter determined that a 2018 Mazda CX5 was heading southbound on Toll 49. Its driver, identified as 28-year-old Daisy Pineda, of Lindale, was reportedly driving at an unsafe speed. At the same time, a Dodge 2500 pick-up pulling a trailer was northbound on the same route.
For reasons still under investigation, Pineda’s vehicle spiraled out of control and veered into the path of the truck pulling a trailer. The two cars collided as a result and wound up severely dented.
The female motorist and two juvenile passengers in her vehicle suffered major injuries. One of the minors, an 8-year-old female, sustained fatal injuries in the collision. Judge Andy Dunklin pronounced her deceased at the scene and had her remains conveyed to Lighthouse Funeral Home, Tyler.
Pineda and a 2-year-old passenger received transportation to Christus Trinity Mother Francis Hospital, Tyler, with serious injuries. Hospital staff listed them in critical condition.
Meanwhile, the operator of the pickup, Steven Joseph Worl, 69, of Whitehouse, also suffered injuries. Medics transported him to UT-Health, in Tyler, where he remains in stable condition, the Texas DPS affirmed.
An investigation into the collision is ongoing.
