Police officers attempted to pull over a vehicle driven by Perkins sometime before 1 a.m. Thursday. However, Perkins drove off, authorities said.
The chase continued until Perkins struck a parked car near the intersection of 16th Street and Medical Center Drive, according to car accident reports. The vehicle also struck a tree.
Washington was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the crash, investigators reported Sunday. Perkins, who also is accused of providing authorities with a false name, suffered major injuries that required hospitalization.
After Perkins was released from the hospital, he was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and fleeing in police resulting in a death, police said. Online court records show he was transported to the West Valley Detention Center, where he remained held Sunday on a $1 million bond.
Perkins on Tuesday is set to appear in San Bernardino Superior Court on the charges.
It wasn’t clear from car accident reports available Sunday whether authorities believe factors like speed or intoxication contributed to the fatal wreck.
