Preliminary investigation revealed the fatal victim, Sturghill, was traveling through the southbound lanes on I-5. For reasons yet to be determined, Sturghill let his trailer drift sideways to the center of the road, where it struck a guardrail barrier. After this initial crash, the big rig driver reportedly got off his vehicle and immediately collapsed on the side of the road, near his trailer.
Police said a big rig coming behind the victim at the time ran him over almost immediately, causing fatal injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol. Emergency responders showed up at the location a short while later and pronounced the man dead.
The coroner’s office scheduled a post-mortem examination of the motorist’s body to determine his cause of death.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing, headed by the CHP.
The victim’s family needs to involve auto accident attorneys in such situations to ensure they obtain adequate compensation for their losses.
