According to Officer Tony Im of the Los Angeles Police Department, the preliminary investigation uncovered that two drivers were racing northbound on Western. One of the vehicles struck Smith, who was walking west across the same roadway at 92nd.
The man succumbed to his injuries at the scene, and the medics pronounced him dead. The two racing motorists did not stop to render help to the deceased, making the accident a hit-and-run. The police did not release the description of the vehicles involved, nor the identity of their drivers.
The investigation is ongoing, and the authorities will provide an update at a later time. Anyone with helpful information about the drivers and their vehicles should contact the LAPD on its listed line.
Accident reports show that most hit-and-run accidents involving pedestrians are fatal. The courts in California frown at drivers who flee the scene of an accident without rendering help to the injured. Anyone found guilty of the offense faces time in jail and a fine.
