Howell was traveling northbound on the U.S. Route 45 when he appears to have lost control of the vehicle. His car veered away from the northbound lanes of the road and into the southbound lanes. This caused his vehicle to side swipe the Avalon which was southbound at the time.
The Avalon had two occupants in it. These included 93-year-old Sidney Gull of Neoga, Illinois. He was accompanied by 91-year-old Mary Gull, also from Neoga, IL.
Following the accident, Clinton Howell as well as the two occupants in the other vehicle sustained non-critical injuries. Once the first responders arrived on the scene of the accident, they were transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.
Preliminary investigations by the ISP revealed that Howell’s negligence caused the incident. Troopers suspect that he was driving under the influence at the time the incident occurred. He has been cited for improper lane use, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, driving an uninsured vehicle and driving with a suspended license. DUI charges have apparently not been brought yet pending lab results. Subsequent accident reports may show whether or not Howell also faces DUI charges.
