The Boy Scouts of America filed for bankruptcy in late February of 2020. In a hearing that took place in March, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Laurie Silverstein and the Boy Scouts of America agreed that the deadline for survivors to file claims against the organization. This deadline would be 5 p.m. on November 16, 2020. The agreement extended the timeline from the Boy Scout’s original proposal of 80-days.

Based on the original bankruptcy informational brief, from 2017 to 2019, the Boy Scouts of America has spent more than $150 million on settlements, legal, and related costs stemming from sexual assault lawsuits. The brief also stated that the Boy Scouts of America could not continue addressing these sexual assault litigations on a case-by-case basis.

Following suit of another organization that was in the spotlight for sexual assault, the Boy Scouts of America chose a restructuring chapter 11 bankruptcy. Within this bankruptcy, a trust is to be created to compensate those survivors of sexual assault caused within their organization.

The final restructuring plan has not been formally presented to the U.S. Bankruptcy Courts, due to the extension granted to the Boy Scouts of America in a July hearing. This extension allowed the organization an additional 120-days to file their chapter 11 plan. It will now be due on or before October 15, 2020.

With the deadline quickly approaching for the claims filing, legal representatives across the country are trying to help as many survivors of these sexual assaults get their spot in the lawsuit. A recent press release announced that the nationally reputable legal offices of TorkLaw are now offering free case consultations on Boy Scout Sexual Abuse cases.

When California Assembly Bill 218 took effect, it allowed for more of the survivors to step forward in these types of cases. AB218 replaced its predecessor SB1779, extending the statute of limitations in California from eight years to 22 years from the date of maturity (18 years old).

If you are the survivor of a sexual assault that happened during your time in the Boy Scouts of America, call the law offices of TorkLaw for your free consultation. Don’t wait until it’s too late. After November 16, 2020, you may not have another opportunity to make the Boy Scouts of America answer for your pain and suffering.
