A man has been charged in connection with a DUI crash that took place in the Winnebago Count earlier this week. The man was identified as Benjamin D. Welter, 28, of Loves Park. Welter was arrested by the authorities on Thursday, October 1.
The crash in which Welter has been charged took place on Monday, September 28. According to the details shared by the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department, the crash occurred at night and was reported around 8:30 p.m.

It involved two vehicles. These were identified as a Honda pickup truck and a Chevy Silverado. The two vehicles apparently collided head-on in the 5500 block of the Kilburn Avenue. By the time the first responders and deputies arrived on the scene of the crash, they found both vehicles with significant damage to the front.
The Silverado had two occupants in it at the time of the collision. One of these was Welter who was driving the vehicle. The other was identified by the deputies as a female passenger. The pickup truck only had a single occupant in it that was driving the vehicle.
The truck driver and the female passenger in Silverado both sustained injuries. The injuries of the passenger were reported as life-threatening. The nature and extent of the Honda driver’s injuries remain unknown.
Welter abandoned the scene of the accident following the crash. He was later apprehended and charged with five counts of aggravated DUI. In addition, he has also been charged with failure to report a personal injury. Further accident reports will reveal the precise penalties he faces for these charges.
