The single-vehicle crash occurred around 10:45 p.m. on Interstate 75 in Ringgold.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, four more people were hurt in the tragic accident that happened close to mile marker 351.
The authorities said the teenage girl was in the front seat of a 2002 Ford Explorer that was driven by a Dalton, Georgia teenage boy.
The GSP said the 17-year-old driver was going too fast for the road conditions and he failed to remain in his lane.
Police disclosed that the Explorer spun counter-clockwise, veered off the west shoulder of the street, and collided with a guardrail on the Smith’s side of the car.
The SUV subsequently breached guardrail and went down an embankment before overturning.
Three people were ejected from the vehicle: the driver, a 17-year-old passenger in the backseat, and Smith.
This trio and the two people who remained in the vehicle were transported to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga for medical attention.
Smith died while at the hospital.
According to the GSP, no one involved was wearing a seatbelt.
Investigations into the crash are ongoing and the public could learn more details in other accident reports. The GSP Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is looking into the accident.
Meanwhile, Smith’s parents may be able to file a wrongful death claim against the driver of the SUV, depending on the specific circumstances of the crash. This would enable them to recover damages.
