According to a spokesperson for the Georgia State Patrol, Trooper Colby Huff, the incident took place in eastern Putnam County and left three casualties in its wake.
Trooper Colby affirmed that a 1995 Chevy van conveying two occupants was heading west along with the 300-mile marker on Interstate 5 in Monterey when it encountered another vehicle, a Ford F-150 pickup, traveling in the same direction just as it attempted rounding a curve.
The two vehicles collided with each other at the curve, resulting in a devastating wreck. The driver of the Chevy, Lee Stafford, alongside his passenger, Tonya Burtum, 37, both from Jamestown, Tennessee, was severely injured in the traffic collision.
The other motorist also sustained major injuries. Emergency responders rescued the victims shortly after and transported them to Cookeville Regional Medical Center for treatment of their injuries.
Authorities did not immediately disclose if any of the drivers were impaired at the time of the collision. Further details concerning the crash were withheld.
