The CHP said that the men were precisely north of Highway 74 when the vehicle for unknown reasons left the unpaved road and went down a steep embankment. The investigators determined that both men were ejected from the Polaris before it rested.
When rescuers arrived at the scene, they searched with the help of a helicopter and located Lopez-Mauricio walking up the dirt embankment. The medics airlifted him to the hospital for treatment, while the search for his passenger continued.
The search party found Lopez-Perez 250-feet down the incline, and there was nothing they could do for the unresponsive man. The authorities pronounced him dead. The CHP investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the tragic accident.
Reports of car accidents show that motor vehicle crashes are not uncommon on unpaved roads. Law enforcement agencies advise drivers traveling on such roadways to maintain the speed limit, avoid sudden changes in direction, accelerate and brake slowly, and increase following distance.
