The authorities said that an Amtrak train going from Portland to Seattle struck and killed Williams for an unknown reason. The man, who is believed to be homeless, was pronounced dead at the scene, and the medical examiner ruled his death as an accident.
There is currently no additional information on the accident, and the investigation is ongoing. The authorities will release an update when they have more details.
Trains are estimated to kill about one person every 100 minutes, making it approximately 1000 persons every year. More than half of all train-related accidents take place at unprotected railway crossings, with 80% lacking adequate warning devices like lights and gates.
Some of the causes of train-related accidents range from human error, mechanical failure, reckless pedestrians and drivers, to negligence. The latter is either the fault of the railway company because of a conductor or a railroad employee.
Proof of negligence is a valid ground for bringing a lawsuit against the railroad company to recover damages. Those who wish to sue would require the services of a top accident lawyer for legal advice and representation.
