Nearby was an 18-wheeler semi stuck in the mud near a northbound exit.
The preliminary investigation conducted by police at the scene concluded that the driver of the Ford Mustang got out of his car after getting it stuck in the median. He was standing near the car when the 18-wheeler veered off of the roadway and hit the Mustang driver.
There were two witnesses to the accident that stopped and tried to help the man hit by the 18-wheeler.
Police later released the identity of the man hit by the semi as Midlothian City Council member Art Pierard.
The Midlothian mayor, Richard Reno, made a statement on Thursday that addressed the circumstances and the death of Pierard.
In his statement, he discussed how Pierard was a valued member of the City Council and during his tenure, he was a key element in the passing of the Senior Citizen’s Tax Freeze. He also helped in the reduction of Midlothian’s Tax Rate as well.
He spoke fondly of Pierard’s passion and contributions to the city.
Pierard had been a member of the Midlothian City Council since 2018. His expiration on the council was not due to expire until 2021.
Police have not released any additional information surrounding the circumstances of the accident. There is no mention as to any injuries that the truck driver may have sustained, nor why he left the road in the first place.
The investigation into the accident is currently ongoing with the Waxahachie Police Department.
