The Bakersfield Police Department arrested 28-year-old Anthony Brennan Herrera on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and elder abuse at a home in Central Bakersfield, California. They took him into custody on Tuesday morning, July 7th, and he is also facing a charge of residential burglary.
According to the BPD investigators, a little after 5 a.m., they dispatched officers to a residence on Hubbard and Spruce streets after a 911 call of a burglary in progress. When officers arrived, they found an 85-year-old woman suffering from laceration to the head and injuries consistent with battery.

Medics conveyed the woman to the hospital and described the injuries as non-life-threatening. Further investigation by the officers revealed that Herrera entered the woman’s house through a window on the ground floor, while she and another resident slept.
He allegedly attacked the victim with a glass bottle and fled the home when the other resident confronted him. The BPD said that they found the suspect several blocks from the crime scene and placed him under arrest. They booked him into the Kern County Jail on felony charges, and Herrera would appear in court at 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 9th.
Elder abuse is tried by California prosecutors as a misdemeanor or a felony, depending on each case’s facts. A person charged with the former upon conviction faces a year in county jail and a fine up to $6,000 while the latter carries up to four years in state prison.
