The California Highway Patrol said the younger man fell asleep while driving and collided head-on with the older man. The impact of the collision left Rodriguez and Marin with extensive wounds, and the medics rushed the two to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.
A passenger in the SUV, identified as a 32-year-old San Jose man, sustained fatal injuries that he succumbed to. The authorities did not release his identity pending notification of next-of-kin. Alcohol or drugs did not play a role in the accident, and the investigation remains active.
Reports of car accidents show that motor vehicles collisions occur when drivers least expect it and for several reasons. One of the latter is falling asleep while behind the wheel of a car. It is caused by motorists not getting adequate rest before taking to the road or ingesting drugs that induce sleep.
Traffic officials advise drivers to ensure they have a night of adequate sleep before driving and avoid pills with drowsiness as a side effect. When feeling sleepy while behind the wheel, pull over to the slow lane; wait for it to pass before continuing or seek another means of transport.
