The San Diego resident was southbound in a Toyota Prius that pulled in front of the eastbound light rail tram at 60th Street and Imperial Avenue around 11:45 p.m. The medical examiner’s office said the trolley spun the car around, pushing it 100 feet down the road.
The Toyota ended up pinned against a utility pole, leaving Garza fatally injured. The police believe that the victim was distracted by his cell phone at the time of the occurrence. There is no additional information.
Distracted driving is one of the common causes of motor vehicle accidents, either single or multiple. Distractions include but are not limited to eating, texting, calling, changing CDs, heated arguments with a passenger, and focusing on things other than the road ahead.
It takes a distracted driver about three seconds to crash; thus, drivers must reduce in-car and outside distractions and focus on the road. A driver who wishes to call, text, or eat, should park on the slow lane if on a highway, and finish the task before continuing the trip.
