The Jefferson Independent School District is mourning the loss of one of their elementary school students. Three-year-old Addison Hickman was involved in a car accident on the way to school on February 14. Addison attended pre-kindergarten at Jefferson Primary School.
Reports on the accident indicate that Hickman and her sister, Joli, were passengers in a 1994 Ford Taurus being driven by 59-year-old Karen Cooper of Jefferson.

The accident occurred around 7:21 a.m. when Cooper was driving on Highway 49 in Marshall. Cooper had slowed down for other emergency vehicles that were going to an unrelated accident when she was rear-ended by a 1999 Cadillac DeVille.
48-year-old Michael Carr of Avinger was driving the Cadillac that rear-ended Cooper’s Taurus.
Following the accident, Hickman was taken by life flight to Ochsner LSU Health in Shreveport, Louisiana for treatment of her injuries. Reports stated that she had died from her injuries after arriving at the hospital.
Cooper, Hickman’s sister, and Carr were all transported to local area hospitals for injuries sustained in the accident. Authorities noted that the injuries of the other three were not serious.
There has not been any indication if Carr is facing charges at the present time.
To celebrate Addison and show support to the family, the Jefferson Independent School District is asking that everyone wears pink and purple. These were Addison’s favorite colors.
The school is also making grief counselors available to the students and staff all week long to help them through this sad time.
Those who are among Addison’s immediate surviving family include her parents and eight brothers and sisters.
The funeral for the three-year-old was held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 19. Donations are being requested to help the family with the medical and funeral expenses and can be directed to Meadowbrook Funeral Home.
