The Lake County Coroner’s Office has identified a motorcyclist who was killed in a motorcycle crash. The identification details were released by the coroner on Sunday, September 6. The fatal crash itself had occurred a full week earlier on Sunday, August 30 as per the original accident reports.

According to the Coroner’s Office, the deceased was identified as Sergio Gomez-Zuniga, 20, of North Chicago. Gomez-Zuniga was traveling on a 2005 Suzuki motorcycle when he met the fatal crash. He was riding along the eastbound lanes of the Washington Street at the time.

As Gomez-Zuniga entered the intersection of the Washington Street and Jackson Street, his motorcycle collided with a 2009 Ford pickup truck. The truck was traveling northbound at the time. Gomez-Zuniga had one other person with him on the motorcycle he was riding. Both occupants of the motorcycle were ejected following the collision, sustaining critical injuries.

Once the first responders reached the scene of the crash, Gomez-Zuniga and the other motorcycle occupant were rushed to a local hospital. Attempts to revive Sergio Gomez-Zuniga failed and he died at the hospital later the same day.

The Ford truck involved in the crash also had two occupants in it at the time. These included a woman and her teenage son. Both were wearing seatbelts and remained uninjured in the crash.

Waukegan Police Department continues to investigate the incident. Initial accident reports suggest that the motorcycle had ran a red light when it crashed into the truck. Authorities are also looking at the possible involved of alcohol or drugs.
