A preliminary investigation uncovered that one of the victims drove a black Kia Spectra westbound on Ramona. The motorist crossed the double yellow lines of the roadway for unknown reasons, causing him to collide head-on with an eastbound Ford Expedition.
The crash left the Kia driver trapped with the vehicle on fire, and he remained inside until firefighters put off the flame. Rodriguez, and the other man, who traveled in the SUV, sustained severe injuries and died at the scene. Heath did not state if the unidentified person drove the Ford.
The collision led to Ramona’s closure from Warren to Bridge Street for over four hours while the sheriff’s office and the CHP investigated and cleared the scene. They will release the identity of the second driver after notifying the next-of-kin.
Accidents are not uncommon on Ramona Expressway, and at least twelve drivers or pedestrians have passed away in the last twelve months. The highway between Perris and San Jacinto narrows to one lane in each direction east of Lake Perris State Recreation Area. Speed and inattentiveness are vital contributors to the crashes in the area, and drivers can avoid it by desisting from the two.
